Based in the surf paradise of Raglan, New Zealand, no group combines hardcore surf experience with hard science better than the team at ASR Ltd. ASR Principals, Dr. Kerry Black, BSc, MSc, PhD, and Dr. Shaw Mead, BSc, MSc, PhD. are both lifetime surfers with unmatched knowledge of the science of wave dynamics.
Along with its more traditional role as coastal and estuarine consultants, ASR is the global leader in artificial reef design (for coastal protection, ecosystem enhancement, and surf improvement). They have two highly-regarded reefs already in the water (Narrowneck, AUS and Mt. Manganui, NZ) with dozens of other reef projects in the development stage, including a recently won US Army Corps contract to design a surfing reef at Ventura, California's Oil Piers site.
To bolster their ongoing wave-science research, ASR conducts bathymetric readings of the worldÕs best surf breaks (over 40 to date) and compiles these readings in a database, which helped the company develop the 3DD Suite of computer numerical modeling wave behavior software. This proprietary software has proven itself in real-world artificial reef applications, and was instrumental in designing and testing the Surfpark Wedge pool design.
